Speaking on <em data-start=\"279\" data-end=\"303\">The Joe Vulpis Podcast<\/em>, the 39-year-old actor said Duff was one of his first friends when he moved to L.A. while filming <em data-start=\"402\" data-end=\"425\">Malcolm in the Middle<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"430\" data-end=\"707\">Muniz recalled that they were close in the early 2000s and even appeared together on <em data-start=\"515\" data-end=\"531\">Lizzie McGuire<\/em>. However, things changed after Duff was cast in <em data-start=\"580\" data-end=\"598\">Agent Cody Banks<\/em> \u2014 a decision Muniz said was pushed by her mother, Susan Duff, whom he called \u201cthe epitome of a stage mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"709\" data-end=\"1054\">According to Muniz, Susan learned about the movie while he was visiting the <em data-start=\"785\" data-end=\"801\">Lizzie McGuire<\/em> set and quickly arranged for Hilary to be cast, even though he had creative input over his costar. \u201cThe next day her mom told me, \u2018We\u2019re going to be spending the summer together,\u2019\u201d he said, adding that the studio went around him to finalize the deal.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1056\" data-end=\"1274\">Muniz admitted he was upset with how it happened, saying it created awkwardness on set. \u201cWe were professional, but her mom\u2019s presence made things difficult,\u201d he shared.
