Have you ever seen the letters WC<\/strong> outside a public bathroom and wondered what they mean? You\u2019re not alone. The term refers to a \u201cwater closet\u201d<\/em>\u2014a room containing a toilet and often a sink.<\/p>\n

In 2020, a TikTok couple, Shelby and Dylan, went viral for joking about the confusing names for these spaces. \u201cWhat are they washing in a washroom?\u201d Dylan asked. \u201cThe only thing I wash in there is my hands.\u201d Shelby replied, \u201cDo you rest in a restroom?\u201d prompting him to admit, \u201cThey both don\u2019t make much sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

Commenters chimed in, debating terms like bathroom, restroom, washroom,<\/em> and toilet.<\/em> One joked about being sent to a laundromat after asking for a \u201cwashroom,\u201d while another quipped, \u201cWait till he finds out about water closets.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Merriam-Webster<\/strong>, a water closet<\/em> is \u201ca compartment or room with a toilet.\u201d Historically, bathrooms were for bathing, restrooms for resting or grooming, and water closets specifically for toilets. Depending on where you live, the same space might be called a loo, lavatory, washroom,<\/em> or WC.<\/em><\/p>\n

Before the 19th century, indoor toilets were rare, and people used outhouses. By 1890, water closets became common, separating toilets from bathing areas. In the 20th century, both were combined into one room for convenience.<\/p>\n

Today, WC<\/em> remains a universal sign found in airports, restaurants, and hotels\u2014essentially another way of saying bathroom<\/em> or restroom.<\/em> Online, people still debate its meaning. One Redditor joked, \u201cWhy call it a WC if it isn\u2019t even a closet?\u201d while others noted linguistic twists like the Russian \u201croom without windows\u201d or Esperanto\u2019s \u201cnecesejo,\u201d meaning \u201cnecessary place.\u201d<\/p>\n

Canadians tend to say washroom,<\/em> Midwesterners use it too, but most North Americans stick to bathroom<\/em> or restroom.<\/em> As one commenter summed it up: \u201cWashroom makes the most sense\u2014you should be washing in there, not resting.\u201d<\/p>\n
