When Mom abruptly canceled our weekly family dinner with a cold text\u2014\u201cPlease don\u2019t come today.\u201d<\/em>\u2014my brother Brian and I knew something was wrong.<\/p>\n

Ever since Dad died three years ago, Mom had been the heart of our family. We made a pact to never let her feel alone. I visited Tuesdays, Brian came Fridays, but Sundays were sacred\u2014family dinner, Mom\u2019s famous roast chicken, and love around the same kitchen table we grew up with.<\/p>\n

So when she suddenly canceled, didn\u2019t answer our calls, and left the porch light on all day, we rushed over.<\/p>\n

Inside, we found a man sitting at our kitchen table. He wore the shirt I gave Dad years ago and looked\u00a0exactly<\/em>\u00a0like him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho is that?\u201d Brian demanded.<\/p>\n

Mom, quietly slicing carrots, finally said, \u201cThis is your uncle. Your father\u2019s twin brother.\u201d<\/p>\n

We were stunned. Dad had always told us he was an only child. Mom confessed she had loved James\u2014our uncle\u2014first. He left without a word, and Dad picked up the pieces. They married, had us, and buried the secret for 30 years.<\/p>\n
