Broadway has lost one of its brightest stars.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Elizabeth Franz \u2014 Tony Award\u2013winning actress and beloved Gilmore Girls<\/em> alum \u2014 has died at 84.<\/p>\n

Her husband, Christopher Pelham, told The New York Times<\/em> she passed away at home in Woodbury, Connecticut, after battling cancer and suffering a severe reaction to treatment. The news has left the theater world and TV fans grieving the loss of a formidable American talent.<\/p>\n

A powerhouse performer<\/strong><\/p>\n

Often called \u201cAmerica\u2019s Judi Dench,\u201d Franz first gained attention in the Off-Broadway hit Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All for You<\/em>, a role she originated and for which she earned an Obie Award.<\/p>\n

Her most celebrated performance came in the 1999 Broadway revival of Death of a Salesman<\/em>, where her portrayal of Linda Loman opposite Brian Dennehy won her a Tony. Even Arthur Miller praised her emotional depth. She later reprised the role in Showtime\u2019s 2000 adaptation, earning an Emmy nomination.<\/p>\n

Across six decades, Franz shined in major stage productions\u2014including Brighton Beach Memoirs<\/em>, Morning\u2019s at Seven<\/em>, The Cherry Orchard<\/em>, and The Miracle Worker<\/em>\u2014as well as films like Jacknife<\/em>, Sabrina<\/em>, and Christmas with the Kranks<\/em>. TV audiences knew her from Gilmore Girls<\/em>, Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em>, Law & Order<\/em>, Homeland<\/em>, and more.<\/p>\n

Early hardship, lifelong passion<\/strong><\/p>\n

Born in Akron, Ohio, in 1941, Franz grew up in a troubled home marked by financial struggle and her mother\u2019s mental illness. Her father\u2019s emotional decline after losing his factory job left a lasting impact on her, and acting became her refuge. She later trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.<\/p>\n
