Jimmy Cliff, the magnetic reggae pioneer whose voice powered classics like \u201cMany Rivers to Cross,\u201d \u201cYou Can Get It If You Really Want,\u201d and \u201cVietnam,\u201d has died at 81.<\/p>\n

A soulful singer, actor, and global trailblazer, Cliff helped carry reggae from Jamaica to the world. Known for hits like \u201cI Can See Clearly Now\u201d and his defining role in The Harder They Come<\/em>, he became reggae\u2019s first true international superstar and paved the way for artists like Bob Marley.<\/p>\n

Raised in deep poverty, Cliff rose to global fame with his distinctive tenor and socially aware lyrics. His wife, Latifa Chambers, confirmed he died after a \u201cseizure followed by pneumonia.\u201d His family thanked fans, saying their support sustained him throughout his career.<\/p>\n

Cliff\u2019s breakthrough came with The Harder They Come<\/em>, where he portrayed Ivanhoe \u201cIvan\u201d Martin\u2014an ambitious singer pushed into crime by a ruthless music industry. The film became a cultural landmark, and its soundtrack\u2014featuring Cliff\u2019s \u201cSitting in Limbo\u201d and the title track\u2014helped ignite reggae\u2019s worldwide rise.<\/p>\n

Though his peak was in the \u201970s, Cliff continued creating music for decades, collaborating with icons like the Rolling Stones, Wyclef Jean, Sting, and Annie Lennox. Montego Bay renamed its famous \u201chip strip\u201d Jimmy Cliff Boulevard in his honor.
