I was 68, standing in the home I had signed over to my son three years earlier after he promised to take care of me. I had been buying groceries, cooking, cleaning, paying parts of their bills\u2014insurance, tuition, credit cards\u2014while living in a converted garage.<\/p>\n

When I looked at my son for support, he smiled and said, \u201cLet\u2019s see how you survive now.\u201d<\/p>\n
