He first appeared in the 1985 film, returned in the sequels, and also voiced the character in the animated series. He was also known for playing Stinger, the tough commanding officer in <em data-start=\"423\" data-end=\"432\">Top Gun<\/em> (1986).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"444\" data-end=\"577\">Tolkan\u2019s death was confirmed by <em data-start=\"476\" data-end=\"496\">Back to the Future<\/em> co-writer Bob Gale; he passed peacefully at his home in Lake Placid, New York.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"579\" data-end=\"866\">Born in 1931 in Calumet, Wisconsin, Tolkan had a difficult childhood, leaving school at 15 and briefly joining a gang. He served in the Navy during the Korean War but was discharged due to a heart condition, then studied arts and music on the GI Bill, discovering a passion for acting.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"868\" data-end=\"1272\">He built a steady career in film and theater, appearing in <em data-start=\"927\" data-end=\"936\">Serpico<\/em>, <em data-start=\"938\" data-end=\"958\">Prince of the City<\/em>, <em data-start=\"960\" data-end=\"977\">Family Business<\/em>, <em data-start=\"979\" data-end=\"995\">Love and Death<\/em>, and <em data-start=\"1001\" data-end=\"1011\">WarGames<\/em>, often collaborating with director Sidney Lumet.
