She was an actress, a wife, a mother, a sister, an aunt, and a friend \u2014 all with grace and kind ferocity. Though we grieve, there\u2019s comfort knowing she is no longer suffering and is reunited with her sisters in peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"635\" data-end=\"844\">Born in Marshalltown, Iowa, on September 25, 1946, Hurt studied acting at the University of Iowa and NYU. She made her stage debut in 1974 off-Broadway and earned three Tony nominations over the next decade.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"846\" data-end=\"1256\">Hurt\u2019s film debut in Woody Allen\u2019s <em data-start=\"881\" data-end=\"892\">Interiors<\/em> (1978) earned a BAFTA nomination. She went on to appear in <em data-start=\"952\" data-end=\"977\">Chilly Scenes of Winter<\/em> (1979), <em data-start=\"986\" data-end=\"1015\">The World According to Garp<\/em> (1982), <em data-start=\"1024\" data-end=\"1046\">The Age of Innocence<\/em> (1993), <em data-start=\"1055\" data-end=\"1082\">Six Degrees of Separation<\/em> (1993), and later films including <em data-start=\"1117\" data-end=\"1137\">Autumn in New York<\/em> (2000) and <em data-start=\"1149\" data-end=\"1162\">Young Adult<\/em> (2011). On TV, she appeared on <em data-start=\"1194\" data-end=\"1207\">Law &amp; Order<\/em>, <em data-start=\"1209\" data-end=\"1226\">Thirtysomething<\/em>, and <em data-start=\"1232\" data-end=\"1253\">Saturday Night Live<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1258\" data-end=\"1478\">She was married to actor William Hurt (1971\u20131982) and filmmaker Paul Schrader (1983\u20132023), with whom she had two children, Molly and Sam. Hurt spent her final days in a Jersey City, New Jersey assisted living facility.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1480\" data-end=\"1641\">Known for bringing intelligence, depth, and quiet ferocity to every role, Mary Beth Hurt leaves a legacy of remarkable performances and profound humanity.
