Mary Beth Hurt, the Tony-nominated actress known for her subtle, emotionally powerful performances in films like Interiors<\/em>, Chilly Scenes of Winter<\/em>, and The World According to Garp<\/em>, has died at 79.<\/p>\n

She passed away Saturday at an assisted living facility in Jersey City, New Jersey, her husband, writer-director Paul Schrader, confirmed. Hurt had lived with Alzheimer\u2019s disease since 2015.<\/p>\n

Born Mary Beth Supinger in 1946 in Marshalltown, Iowa, she studied drama at the University of Iowa and later at NYU. She married actor William Hurt in 1972; they divorced in 1982.<\/p>\n

Hurt built a strong Broadway career, earning three Tony nominations for Trelawny of the \u201cWells\u201d<\/em>, Crimes of the Heart<\/em>, and Benefactors<\/em>. She made her film debut in Interiors<\/em>, earning a BAFTA nomination, and later appeared in films like Chilly Scenes of Winter<\/em> and The World According to Garp<\/em>.<\/p>\n

She married Paul Schrader in 1983, and they had two children. Her later credits included The Age of Innocence<\/em>, Affliction<\/em>, Autumn in New York<\/em>, and TV roles in Law & Order<\/em>.<\/p>\n
