Beloved character actor James Tolkan<\/span><\/span>, best known as the strict principal in Back to the Future<\/span><\/span>, has died at 94.<\/p>\n

He played Principal Strickland\u2014famous for calling students \u201cslackers\u201d\u2014across the film series and its animated version. He was also widely known as Stinger in Top Gun<\/span><\/span> alongside Tom Cruise<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n

His death was confirmed by co-writer Bob Gale<\/span><\/span>, who said Tolkan passed peacefully at home.<\/p>\n

Born in 1931 in Wisconsin, Tolkan had a troubled youth but later served briefly in the Navy, studied arts using the GI Bill, and pursued acting in New York. He built a strong career with roles in films like Serpico<\/span><\/span> and WarGames<\/span><\/span>, often playing tough authority figures.<\/p>\n

A lifelong stage actor, he also appeared in Broadway\u2019s Glengarry Glen Ross<\/span><\/span> and stayed connected with fans, even reuniting with Michael J. Fox<\/span><\/span> later in life.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n
