It wasn\u2019t neat. It leaned slightly and looked messy by adult standards. But to Mira, it was perfect because it carried effort and love. I was both proud and worried, knowing how my sister-in-law Mandy valued appearances over everything else. On the drive home, Mira quietly asked if Mandy was upset because we didn\u2019t have much money. That broke me more than anything else. I told her the truth\u2014that kindness matters more than money or appearances.<\/p>\n

Tommy kept that little boat for a year on his nightstand. Mandy never fully recovered socially within the family after that day.
