When Rae and I were seventeen, we planned a life together\u2014she wanted to be a teacher, I wanted to be a doctor, and we dreamed of living side by side in a future far from our small village. Her younger brother Leo was always with us, tagging along everywhere, part of our story in a way neither of us questioned.<\/p>\n

Then the fire changed everything.<\/p>\n

By the time I reached the hospital, Rae was gone, her parents were dead, and eight-year-old Leo was left injured and silent. With a scholarship waiting and my future at stake, I chose to stay and take him home, refusing to let him go into the system.<\/p>\n

Years passed in survival. I worked any job I could, raised Leo without ever calling myself his mother, and kept us afloat however I could. But at sixteen, he left, telling me I wasn\u2019t his family. I let him go.<\/p>\n

We didn\u2019t speak for years.<\/p>\n

Until I found flowers at Rae\u2019s grave\u2014white roses and red ones\u2014and Leo standing there, now a man. He asked me to meet him.<\/p>\n

At dinner, he revealed a small box containing a ring\u2014one that once belonged to Kevin, the man I loved. Leo had taken it years ago, believing he was protecting me by removing my past. Then Kevin appeared, older but still tied to everything we lost.<\/p>\n

In that moment, the truth surfaced: Leo thought he was saving me, Kevin never let go of me, and I had never truly moved on from any of it.<\/p>\n

Through tears, Leo admitted he thought disappearing would free me. Instead, it only bound all of us to the past.<\/p>\n

When Kevin placed the ring back on my finger, it didn\u2019t feel like a new choice\u2014it felt like something unfinished finally finding its way back.<\/p>\n
