A single phone call made me question my entire marriage.<\/p>\n

One afternoon, while my husband Nick was out, I answered his phone and heard a school say: \u201cYour daughter isn\u2019t feeling well, she needs to be picked up.\u201d<\/em> I froze \u2014 we don\u2019t have kids.<\/p>\n

The caller was Parkview Elementary. Even worse, there had been multiple calls from Nick\u2019s phone to that same school two weeks earlier.<\/p>\n

My mind spiraled. Nick had recently started \u201cmarathon training\u201d every Saturday morning, leaving at 6 a.m. and returning around 10:30. He always talked about running with two friends, Jake and Chris. I\u2019d never met them.<\/p>\n

Suddenly, everything felt suspicious. Was he hiding a child? Was \u201ctraining\u201d just an excuse?<\/p>\n

The next Saturday, I followed him.<\/p>\n

He went exactly where he always said \u2014 the city park. And Jake and Chris were real. They ran together, just like he described.<\/p>\n

Then I saw a little girl run up, shouting \u201cDaddy!\u201d \u2014 but she wasn\u2019t Nick\u2019s daughter. She ran to Jake, one of the other runners.<\/p>\n

Nick didn\u2019t even turn around. He just kept running.<\/p>\n

Confused and relieved, I went home.<\/p>\n

That night, I confronted Nick. I told him everything \u2014 the call, the school, the phone logs, and following him.<\/p>\n

He laughed and explained it all:<\/p>\n

Jake had borrowed Nick\u2019s phone to call his daughter\u2019s school after forgetting a form. The school later saved Nick\u2019s number in their system. So when the girl got sick, they accidentally called him.<\/p>\n

There was no secret child. Just a simple mix-up.<\/p>\n

I felt embarrassed for overthinking everything.<\/p>\n

Now we joke about it \u2014 and he even teases me before every run about his \u201csecret family.\u201d<\/p>\n
