David Scott<\/span><\/span>, a longtime Georgia lawmaker and businessman, has died at the age of 80.<\/p>\n

A Democrat serving his 12th term in Congress, Scott was known for advocating for farmers, education, healthcare, veterans, and historically Black colleges and universities. He was also the first Black man to chair the House Agriculture Committee.<\/p>\n

Born in Aynor<\/span><\/span> in 1945, Scott later moved to Georgia, where he built a successful billboard business before entering politics. He served in the Georgia House and Senate before being elected in 2002 to represent Georgia\u2019s 13th Congressional District in the U.S. House.<\/p>\n

Throughout his career, Scott supported gun safety laws, helped create the PeachCare health insurance program for children, and backed education and mental health initiatives for veterans.<\/p>\n
