My father never let us meet our grandmother. \u201cPretend she doesn\u2019t exist,\u201d he\u2019d say, and my mother would always go silent. Growing up, I believed my grandmother must have been a terrible person.<\/p>\n

Years later, while working as a nurse, I saw her name on a hospital admission list\u2014the same name my father once shut down in anger. When I entered her room, I instantly recognized my mother in her face.<\/p>\n

She was gentle, frail, and kind.<\/p>\n
