After remarrying, I worked hard to blend our family, but Greg\u2019s adult daughter, Becca, always treated my daughter Ava and me like outsiders. Ava\u2019s late father had left her a college fund before he passed away, meant to secure her future. One night, Greg shocked me by suggesting we use that money to help pay for Becca\u2019s expensive wedding, claiming \u201cfamily helps family.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stayed calm and pretended to consider it, even as I realized they had likely expected me to agree all along. A few days later, I gave them my answer: I would only provide the money if they signed a contract promising to repay every cent within a year. When they reacted angrily, I pointed out that real family would never sacrifice a child\u2019s future for a wedding.<\/p>\n

Then I placed two documents on the table \u2014 the repayment contract and divorce papers. I told Greg that if he wouldn\u2019t protect Ava\u2019s future, I would, with or without him. Realizing I was serious, Greg eventually moved out, and Becca\u2019s wedding went ahead on a smaller budget.<\/p>\n
