I was washing breakfast dishes when my daughter-in-law walked into my kitchen and said, \u201cWe need to talk about the college fund.\u201d No greeting. No smile. Just that.<\/p>\n

My son Daniel and his wife Natalie had been married seven years. I raised Daniel mostly alone after his father left, working multiple jobs so he could go to college debt-free. Years later, when my grandchildren Owen and Maya were born, I quietly started college funds for them and contributed every month.<\/p>\n

At first, I tried hard to be a respectful mother-in-law and grandmother. I babysat, brought meals, helped whenever they needed me, and stayed out of parenting decisions.
