A 2024 ABC News report documented 1,287 LEO and correctional officer suicides from 2016\u20132022\u201451% from local police and 20% from sheriff\u2019s offices.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"589\" data-end=\"611\">Recent HCSO Losses<\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"613\" data-end=\"952\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"613\" data-end=\"714\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"615\" data-end=\"714\"><strong data-start=\"615\" data-end=\"642\">Deputy Christina Kohler<\/strong>, 37, was reported missing on March 12. She was found dead the same day.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"715\" data-end=\"839\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"717\" data-end=\"839\"><strong data-start=\"717\" data-end=\"748\">Former Deputy Maria Vasquez<\/strong>, 42, died by suicide days later at her home. She had left the department in December 2024.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"840\" data-end=\"952\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"842\" data-end=\"952\"><strong data-start=\"842\" data-end=\"875\">Former Deputy William Bozeman<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"880\" data-end=\"909\">Former Deputy Long Nguyen<\/strong>, 58, also died by suicide in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"954\" data-end=\"985\">Mental Health Support Urged<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"987\" data-end=\"1247\">Experts like Dr. Ron Acierno (UTHealth Houston) and Dr. Thomas McNeese (HCSO Behavioral Health) stress the importance of breaking the stigma around mental health care in law enforcement. \u201cThis profession takes a toll,\u201d said McNeese. \u201cReaching out is critical.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"1249\" data-end=\"1268\">HCSO&#8217;s Response<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1270\" data-end=\"1484\">The department is expanding mental health and peer support services.
