Law<\/em>, as well as films such as <em>Papillon<\/em> and <em>The Last Picture Show<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond acting, he won a landmark legal battle against MGM over contract violations and served on the national board of the Screen Actors Guild. Smithers was preceded in death by his wife, acting coach S.
