At 25, I was three months away from marrying Derek when he suddenly disappeared.

His dorm room was empty. He withdrew from college. He stopped answering my calls and letters.

For nearly 50 years, I wondered what I’d done wrong.

Then one afternoon, while I was watching my grandchildren in the park, an elderly man sat beside me.

“Maggie.”

I froze.

I knew that voice.

“Derek?”

He smiled sadly.

“You’re late,” I whispered.

“I know.”

Then he reached into his coat and pulled out a tiny red plastic comb with several missing teeth.

I stared at it.

“You disappeared for almost fifty years and came back with a comb?”

“Your mother’s.”

My heart stopped.

“My mother died fourteen years ago. You never met her.”

He looked at the comb.

“She gave it to me when I was eight.”

I couldn’t breathe.

Then he told me the truth.

Before I was born, Derek had lived with my parents as their foster child.

He remembered our childhood home, my mother’s kitchen, and even the squeaky third stair.

He had always believed my parents sent him away because they were having their own child.

Me.

Years later, when he discovered the truth, he panicked.

He realized he loved me—but he was terrified that part of that love came from the family he’d lost.

So he disappeared.

Within a year, he knew he’d made the wrong choice.

But every year he waited made coming back harder.

“You knew you loved me?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you return?”

He looked down.

“Shame. And then I convinced myself you’d be better without me.”

I laughed bitterly.

“You made that decision for me too.”

“I know.”

Before leaving, he held out the old red comb.

“I thought you should have this.”

I placed it back in his hand.

“She gave it to you. Keep it.”

Then my grandson called me from the playground.

I looked at Derek one last time.

“An old friend,” I told my grandson when he asked who he was.

And for the first time in nearly fifty years, I walked away without needing another answer.
