My ex-husband invited me to his wedding just to remind me that I had no one to bring.

“Your invitation includes a +1, but let’s be honest—you don’t have anyone.”

That was Max.

After nearly thirteen years of marriage, he left me for his personal trainer, Claire.

“You don’t look like you used to,” he told me. “Men are visual. Claire is perfect.”

Those words stayed with me long after the divorce.

Then came the wedding invitation.

I decided to attend for our daughters—and bring a fake boyfriend.

His name was Edward, my coworker and one of the few people who had supported me through the divorce.

When Max saw us arrive together, he laughed.

“Him? Your boyfriend? No one would ever date you, especially someone like him.”

My face burned.

Edward simply smiled.

“Actually, Max, I brought you a wedding gift.”

Five minutes later, he returned with a large cardboard box.

Max opened it.

Inside was an enormous pair of old trousers.

“What is this?” Max asked.

“Mine,” Edward replied. “I used to be much heavier.”

Then Edward looked at Max.

“Veronica never made me feel like my body determined my worth. She made me realize I had started treating myself the way someone else was treating her.”

Max’s smile disappeared.

“She didn’t fix me,” Edward continued. “There was nothing wrong with me that needed fixing before I deserved to enjoy my life.”

Then my daughter found me in the hallway.

“Mom, why did Dad say nobody would date you?”

I crouched beside her.

“He was being unkind.”

“Edward isn’t really your boyfriend?”

“No.”

“Then why did you say he was?”

I hesitated.

“Because I wanted your dad to think somebody wanted me.”

She looked at me and said:

“But we wanted you here.”

That broke something open inside me.

Later, Max asked what was happening between Edward and me.

I looked at him.

“You really need to know the answer, don’t you?”

Then I walked away.

In the car, I caught my reflection in the window.

For the first time, I didn’t check my waist.

I didn’t wonder what Max would think.

I simply looked at myself.

My daughter shouted from the back seat:

“Mom! Go!”

I smiled.

And I did.
