For two years, our 86-year-old neighbor had been part of our family. He ate at our table, played with our five children, and they called him “Grandpa.”

So when we decided to make it official through adult adoption, I expected him to cry.

Instead, Walter went pale.

“There’s something I have to tell you,” he whispered.

Then he asked us to send the children into another room.

“I didn’t move here by accident,” he said. “I knew who you were before we ever met.”

My heart stopped.

He had taken an ancestry test after his wife died.

He had been looking for his granddaughter.

Her name was Abby.

My name was Abby.

Walter was my biological grandfather.

But the biggest shock was still coming.

He had discovered who I was two years before moving next door.

And he had chosen to keep it secret.

I demanded to know why he had never found me as a child.

That was when he showed me a box filled with old photographs and letters from my biological mother, Kate.

She had given me up for adoption when she was nineteen.

She had spent years trying to find me.

She had written letters she could never send, wondering whether I was happy, whether I had a safe home, and whether someone was waiting for me when I came home.

But she died nine years ago.

I never got the chance to meet her.

Walter had finally found me—but he was too afraid to tell me because he was terrified I’d reject him.

I couldn’t forgive him immediately.

But I couldn’t lose him either.

A few days later, I found him sitting alone on his porch.

“I’m still angry at you,” I told him.

“You should be.”

“But I’m glad you found me.”

He covered his face and cried.

That evening, I put a plate on his usual chair.

“Sit down, Grandpa. Dinner’s getting cold.”

For the first time, I knew exactly where he belonged.

For two years, our 86-year-old neighbor had been part of our family.
