The next morning, two black baby blankets arrived with a card that read, “For the girls. Just as promised.”

When my 82-year-old mother saw the tiny silver stars embroidered on them, she burst into tears.

“Oh, God,” she whispered.

I froze.

When I confronted Mom, she finally revealed a secret she’d hidden for 55 years.

“You weren’t born alone,” she whispered. “You had a twin sister.”

Her name was Claire, and she’d spent her whole life believing her birth mother never wanted her.

But the black blankets weren’t a threat. They were a promise—and the beginning of a family reunion none of us would ever forget.

When I finally met Claire, I saw my own face staring back at me. After 55 years apart, we held hands and began discovering the years we’d lost.
