At 62, after 38 years serving coffee and remembering every customer\u2019s favorite breakfast, I was suddenly sent to wash dishes by Chad Whitmore, the diner\u2019s 30-year-old owner.<\/p>\n

I said nothing. I had started working at Gus\u2019s Diner in 1988, when I had only $41 and a four-year-old daughter. Gus had given me a chance when I desperately needed one, and I had never forgotten his promise.<\/p>\n

After Gus died, Chad bought the business, renamed it Rise & Grind, removed paper menus, raised prices, and even started charging for coffee refills.<\/p>\n
