After work one evening, I found my front door lock jammed with a toothpick. My brother fixed it, but when it happened again the next night, he installed a hidden camera.

The footage revealed something unexpected: a little girl in a bright yellow raincoat was sabotaging my lock.

Instead of getting angry, I waited for her and gently asked why she kept doing it.

Her answer broke my heart.

Her father had been a handyman, but he had become seriously ill and “gone away.” Unable to accept that he might never return, she kept breaking my lock to create jobs for him, hoping he would have something to fix.

Rather than scold her, I offered to let her help me repair things around the house.

Soon, our little repair sessions became a routine. We fixed loose boards, squeaky hinges, and eventually a toy car her father had promised to repair. When it finally worked again, she hugged me and whispered that it felt as if her dad had helped one more time.

Months later, I discovered an old toolbox that had belonged to her father. Each tool had a handwritten label with an encouraging note. When I returned it to her, she cried and called it “his hands.”

Eventually, she began helping neighbors with small repairs under her own handmade sign: Little Tomas Fix-It Services.

What began as a broken lock became a beautiful journey of healing, hope, and remembrance.

Sometimes, what looks like trouble is really a child’s way of holding on to someone they love.
