My ex-husband invited me to his Halloween party with one cruel reminder: no man would ever want me again.

Six months earlier, I’d discovered his affair with his younger secretary, Christy. Now he was living with her in a new house, and he seemed determined to make me feel like the unwanted ex-wife.

I decided I wouldn’t let him embarrass me.

So I asked an old college friend, Daniel, to pretend to be my boyfriend for one evening. He agreed, and on Halloween, he arrived wearing a dark suit and a silver mask.

When we walked into the party, Jason immediately started making jokes.

“Your boyfriend? What, did you pay him?”

Then he looked at me and sneered, “No man would ever date someone like you.”

Daniel calmly reached up and removed his mask.

Jason’s smile disappeared. Christy’s face turned pale.

“No… this can’t be happening! Not you!”

Daniel greeted them, and I quickly realized something was wrong. He knew Christy.

Then a boy dressed as an astronaut ran across the room.

“Dad!”

It was Oliver, Daniel’s son.

And the woman standing beside Jason was Daniel’s ex-wife.

I’d never known Christy was the woman Daniel had divorced. He explained that she had repeatedly told him Oliver didn’t want to see him, even when Daniel had tried to arrange visits.

Jason had believed Christy’s version of events.

But Daniel had messages showing that he had asked to attend his son’s school fair and that Christy had turned him away. Oliver had been told his father didn’t want to come.

When the truth began coming out, Jason realized Christy had lied to him about Daniel.

She tried to defend herself, but Daniel refused to argue in front of the children. He made it clear that the visitation issues would be handled through their lawyers and the parenting coordinator.

Jason then accused me of bringing Daniel just to humiliate him.

I finally stood up for myself.

“I came because our children wanted me here. I don’t need your approval to attend their party, and I won’t apologize for moving on.”

The children finished their Halloween activities, and the adults left the argument behind for another day.

On the drive home, my daughter asked if Daniel would come over again.

I looked at him and smiled.

“I hope so.”

Three weeks later, Daniel told me his visits with Oliver were happening again through the parenting coordinator.

And he and I were still seeing each other.

One evening, he kissed me outside my door and asked, “So we’re a thing now?”

For the first time in a long time, I smiled without worrying about what my ex-husband thought.
