My granddaughter Sophie had one wish for the school Halloween fair: to continue the special cookie tradition she had shared with her late mother.

Her mother had passed away almost a year earlier, and Sophie wanted to use the same handwritten recipe they had followed every Halloween.

But her father, Robert, had recently married Rachel, a woman who cared more about expensive clothes, designer bags, and appearances than family traditions.

When Robert promised to help Sophie bake, Rachel insisted they attend a charity reception instead.

So Sophie came to my house, and together we made all seventy cookies.

She even saved one crooked pumpkin cookie for her mother.

The next morning, we proudly arranged everything at the school fair.

I briefly went to my car. When I returned, I found Sophie standing beside the table with tears in her eyes.

Rachel had thrown every single cookie into the trash.

“Did you seriously think I was going to let you put that junk out?” she said. “They look cheap!”

Those cookies had been made using the recipe Sophie’s mother had treasured.

Rachel claimed she had spent $350 making the table look presentable and insisted her expensive desserts were much better.

I was furious, but Sophie squeezed my hand.

“Grandma, it’s okay. I have an idea.”

She calmly asked Rachel to look underneath the table.

The moment Rachel lifted the tablecloth, she screamed.

An ant farm belonging to a boy named Ben had been placed beneath it, and Rachel had reached into its open feeding compartment. Dozens of ants were now crawling over her fingers.

She jumped backward, knocked over a chair, and began shouting that Sophie had tried to hurt her.

When Robert arrived, Rachel immediately blamed his daughter.

Instead of asking what had happened, Robert shouted at Sophie and threatened to send her to boarding school if she embarrassed Rachel again.

Sophie went silent.

But while collecting our things, I noticed something suspicious beneath the table: empty supermarket dessert boxes with a price sticker showing $24.99.

Rachel had claimed those desserts cost $350.

I photographed the packaging and kept the receipt.

That evening, Sophie asked me whether her father really wanted to send her away.

I promised her she wouldn’t face that situation alone.

The next day, I contacted Vanessa, an old friend of Rachel’s. During our conversation, I discovered something even more troubling.

Rachel had apparently been hiding financial problems, exaggerating her family’s wealth, and telling people that Robert only needed a little push to put his house in her name.

That house had belonged to Robert and my late daughter. Sophie had grown up there.

So I invited Robert and Rachel to Sunday dinner.

During the meal, I brought up the house and told them that Sophie was its sole beneficiary.

Rachel immediately became furious.

“Why wasn’t I consulted?” she demanded.

Then she revealed what she really thought about the situation.

She complained that everything revolved around Sophie and admitted she hadn’t married Robert to spend her life raising someone else’s child.

Robert finally began to understand what had been happening.

He confronted Rachel about the boarding-school threats and her attitude toward his daughter.

Then he asked her one question:

“Did you marry me for my money?”

Rachel couldn’t give him a convincing answer.

Robert finally made his decision.

“I’m choosing my daughter. I should’ve done it sooner.”

After Rachel left, Robert sat beside Sophie and apologized for threatening to send her away.

She looked at him and asked:

“Will you bake with me next time?”

He smiled.

“Absolutely.”

“Even if there’s a party?”

“Even then.”

Sophie finally smiled again.

Her mother was still gone, and nothing could replace the traditions they had shared. But that night, she had something she had been missing for a long time: her father’s promise that she would come first.
