A week before Christmas, I was making coffee when I overheard my daughter, Amanda, talking on the phone.

“Just leave all eight kids with Mom. She doesn’t have anything else to do anyway. We’re going to the hotel and enjoy some peace.”

I froze behind the living room door, unable to believe what I was hearing.

Amanda continued laughing as she explained that her husband, Martin, had already booked a hotel by the coast. Her brother Robert and his wife Lucy had also agreed to leave their children behind so they could enjoy a resort getaway.

They had planned everything without even asking me.

Amanda even said, “Mom has experience. She knows how to handle all eight of them.”

Then she called the plan “perfect.”

Perfect for them, perhaps. But not for me.

I quietly placed my coffee mug on the table. My hands were shaking—not because I was afraid, but because I was finally realizing how little they respected my time and feelings.

And this Christmas, I decided things would be very different.
