I was watching her and saw her touch it to check it wasn\u2019t too hot when she pulled it out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But, as she removed it, the seemingly harmless experiment went tragically wrong.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-1335072002\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-aed3b68eb51bd7334ce2c688ee3a7c20\" class=\"newsner-aed3b68eb51bd7334ce2c688ee3a7c20 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"h-blood-curling-scream\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Blood-curling scream\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cIt all happened so quickly,\u201d Selby said, re-living the horrifying moment where the NeeDoh toy exploded and bathed the tot in burning goo, that\u2019s been compared to a \u201cnapalm-like substance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard her scream, and it was like a blood-curdling scream. It had exploded all over her chest, mouth and chin,\u201d Selby said, adding that after hearing the painful cries from his daughter, he rushed over and tried to brush the bubbling goo off her body and clothes.<\/p>\n<p>But the substance was \u201cthick and sticky,\u201d making it difficult for him to remove from Scarlett.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhenever I touched her, my hand stuck to her. It was really thick and sticky. I ripped her shirt off of her because it was stuck to her shirt as well,\u201d the father said of the incident that happened about five months ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was a complete mess. She spent a week in the hospital and for three days of that she was in the coma. I don\u2019t think I could speak to anybody without crying the entire time,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-still-screaming\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Still screaming\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Selby and Scarlet\u2019s mom, Amanda Blakenship, rushed their daughter to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/hospital\/\">hospital<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was in so much pain. She was still screaming when we got to the hospital and it\u2019s a good 30-minute drive from where we live. It was terrible how scared she was and how much that hurt her,\u201d the 35-year-old mom said, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-14507251\/schoolgirl-coma-horrific-injuries-microwave-toy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Daily Mail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Once the family arrived at St Louis Children\u2019s Hospital, Scarlett was placed in an induced coma for three days while doctors worked tirelessly to stabilize her condition. She also had a feeding tube installed due to her lips being so badly burned.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-2076722476\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-e705e758ec69e425bb4a7e510d3a2905\" class=\"newsner-e705e758ec69e425bb4a7e510d3a2905 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>After a week in the hospital, she was finally discharged, but her struggles were far from over.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-self-conscious\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Self conscious\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>While little Scarlett was being treated for her injuries, doctors decided against giving the girl a skin graft but her mother fears it may still be necessary as her scarring is \u201cso bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And the \u201cprofound scars,\u201d Blankenship said, go beyond just the physical.<\/p>\n<p>She often finds Scarlett staring at herself in the mirror after a bath, tears streaming down her face \u2013 an emotional reminder of the trauma she\u2019s endured.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe gets very self-conscious, and I\u2019ll see her trying to cover her scar up with her shirt when we\u2019re out in public sometimes, or she\u2019ll come home from school and say another kid asked her about it,\u201d Blakenship said. \u201cI tell her she doesn\u2019t need to be embarrassed about it. The product that\u2019s in it is like glue, so you essentially have hot glue\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/accident\/\">exploding\u00a0<\/a>on you.
