I never thought I\u2019d have to fight for my right to eat a protein bar on a plane\u2014but that\u2019s exactly what happened when entitled parents prioritized their son\u2019s tantrum-free flight over my health.<\/strong><\/p>\n

My name\u2019s Elizabeth. I\u2019m a marketing consultant who travels constantly, and I\u2019ve lived with Type 1 diabetes since I was 12. It\u2019s invisible, but very real\u2014without snacks or insulin, I can end up hospitalized. I\u2019m always careful: glucose tablets in every bag, snacks on hand, CGM on my wrist.<\/p>\n

On a recent flight from Chicago to Seattle, I felt my blood sugar crash right after takeoff. I pulled out a protein bar, but the mom beside me immediately objected: “Our son is very sensitive.”<\/em> The boy, maybe nine, was glued to an iPad and kicking the seat in front of him. He didn\u2019t even notice me.<\/p>\n

I tried to wait for the drink cart, but when it finally came, the dad told the attendant, “No food for this row.”<\/em> Apparently, seeing food \u201cset off\u201d their son. Meanwhile, the kid was eating Skittles.<\/p>\n

As my CGM buzzed and my hands trembled, I\u2019d had enough.<\/p>\n

I turned to the flight attendant and said loudly: “I have Type 1 Diabetes. I need to eat now. Thank you.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The surrounding passengers stared. The parents protested. I pointed at the Skittles on the tray and calmly said, “Your son\u2019s fine. And I\u2019m not putting my health at risk for your convenience.”<\/em><\/p>\n

I got my snack, leveled my blood sugar, and finished the flight in silence\u2014except for one final jab from the mom, who tried to “educate me” on her son’s condition. I replied: “Manage your child. I\u2019ll manage my diabetes. Book a private flight next time.”<\/em><\/p>\n
