What began as a brief daytime hike to a viewpoint turned into one of the most haunting mysteries in recent memory.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"395\" data-end=\"609\">Dressed in light clothing and carrying just one backpack with a camera, phones, and water, the women left on April 1 but never returned. The next day, their host family grew concerned when only their dog came back.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"611\" data-end=\"906\">A massive search followed. Weeks later, a local woman found a backpack containing their belongings. Disturbingly, their phones had made dozens of failed emergency calls in the days after they vanished.
