Many stray and neglected dogs suffer from matted fur, causing them pain and distress \u2014 but a simple haircut can change everything.<\/p>\n
That was the case for Matt, a 6-year-old dog rescued by the South Plains SPCA on July 16. Covered in five years’ worth of thick, matted fur, Matt was in the worst condition the SPCA had ever seen \u2014 with rotten skin, overgrown nails, and embedded fur so severe it had grown into his skin.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was probably seen and overlooked for years,\u201d said SPCA President Kim Moyers. \u201cIt was shocking.\u201d<\/p>\n
To ease his pain, Matt was sedated while groomers removed three pounds of fur, including a collar and leash tangled in his coat. His fur was packed with debris and bugs, causing bruising and anemia, though he tested negative for heartworm and tick diseases.<\/p>\n
Now on medication and awaiting dental work, Matt is already seeing major changes. After grooming, he looked like a new dog. \u201cHe\u2019s just drop-dead gorgeous,\u201d said his foster, Tori Houston.<\/p>\n
Matt recently enjoyed his first walk in years, tail wagging with joy. He\u2019s now recovering in foster care and will be ready for adoption soon.<\/p>\n
