A Brazilian parent and child, formerly identifying as mother and daughter, have transitioned together and now live as father and son.<\/p>\n
Raphael, 38, and his 10-year-old son Gustavo\u2014both assigned female at birth\u2014documented their journey to over 24,000 Instagram followers, made possible by changes to Brazil\u2019s public healthcare system.<\/p>\n
Gustavo began his transition at age 4, while Raphael came out as male last year. They received free treatment at S\u00e3o Paulo hospitals specializing in gender identity care.<\/p>\n
Though their transitions occurred in parallel, Raphael insists neither influenced the other. \u201cHe gave me strength and courage,\u201d Raphael said of Gustavo.<\/p>\n
Gustavo added, \u201cIt wasn\u2019t difficult to call my mother dad.\u201d<\/p>\n
The duo has spoken out against being referred to by their pre-transition names and continue to advocate for trans rights online.
