Few stories compare to that of Martin Pistorius, who woke up after spending 12 years trapped in a coma-like state, fully conscious but unable to move or speak.<\/p>\n
In 1988, 12-year-old Martin fell ill in South Africa and quickly deteriorated. Diagnosed with meningitis and tuberculosis of the brain, he slipped into a vegetative state. Doctors gave up hope, telling his parents to take him home to die. His father cared for him tirelessly, despite being told Martin had the brain function of a 3-month-old.<\/p>\n
Years later, Martin slowly regained awareness \u2014 but remained locked inside his body, unable to communicate. He was traumatized, especially after hearing his mother say, \u201cI hope you die,\u201d out of despair.<\/p>\n
Everything changed when an aromatherapist noticed subtle responses. Tests confirmed Martin was mentally aware. His parents got him a computer with communication software, and over time, he regained the ability to communicate.<\/p>\n
He later found work, learned to build websites, and graduated university. In 2008, he met Joanna, who saw past his disability. They married in 2009 and now live in England, where Martin works as a web designer.<\/p>\n
