On my son’s first day of school, the teacher called him a name I\u2019d never heard\u2014Jamie<\/em>. And he responded. My husband didn\u2019t flinch. In that moment, everything I thought was safe shattered.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That morning, I was up early, ironing Lucas\u2019s brand-new school shirt. First grade. I wanted it to be perfect\u2014even if our life wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Travis was on the couch again, beer can on the floor, ESPN on loop. When I asked if he was coming with us, he brushed me off: \u201cLater.\u201d<\/p>\n
