He died 90 minutes later at a nearby hospital.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"408\" data-end=\"596\">The attack occurred after an audience member questioned him about transgender mass shooters. Kirk\u2019s final words, according to reports, were:<br data-start=\"548\" data-end=\"551\" \/><strong data-start=\"551\" data-end=\"596\">\u201cCounting or not counting gang violence?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"598\" data-end=\"764\">Authorities believe the shooter acted alone, firing from a rooftop about 200 feet away. The FBI called it a \u201cpolitical assassination.\u201d No one is currently in custody.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"766\" data-end=\"979\">Kirk, known for his staunch conservative views and pro-Trump stance, was on his \u201cAmerican Comeback Tour.\u201d He had faced protests at UVU before, including a petition with over 7,000 signatures opposing his presence.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"981\" data-end=\"1093\">Donald Trump mourned his death on Truth Social, calling him a \u201cLegendary\u201d figure and a \u201cvery, very good friend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1095\" data-end=\"1172\">Kirk is survived by his wife, Erika Frantzve, their daughter, and infant son.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1174\" data-end=\"1377\">Political leaders from both parties condemned the attack.
