Just five years old, she was full of life, laughter, and love \u2014 and had just started school, proudly showing off her new bike after Christmas.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"310\" data-end=\"582\">But on December 27, 2023, a family walk near Dovestone Reservoir turned tragic. Lila developed a headache, vomited, and later complained of neck pain. Her mother, Rachael Mincherton \u2014 a nurse at Tameside General Hospital \u2014 feared meningitis and took her there immediately.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"584\" data-end=\"816\">Despite being seen by multiple staff, Lila was sent home around 2:30 a.m. with suspected tonsillitis. By 9 a.m. the next day, Rachael found her daughter unresponsive. Lila had died from pneumococcal meningitis \u2014 a preventable death.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"818\" data-end=\"943\">An inquest later confirmed that neglect played a role. Jurors said early admission and antibiotics could have saved her life.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"945\" data-end=\"1133\">Rachael and Lila\u2019s father, Darren Marsland, were devastated \u2014 made worse by the fact they never received a personal apology. The hospital only issued a general statement after the inquest.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1135\" data-end=\"1330\">Now, Lila\u2019s family channels their grief into <em data-start=\"1180\" data-end=\"1194\">Lila\u2019s Light<\/em>, a charity providing bereavement bags to children who\u2019ve lost siblings.
