Michael J. Fox: Resilience in the Face of Parkinson\u2019s and Loss<\/strong><\/p>\n

Michael J. Fox has faced enormous personal and physical challenges in recent years \u2014 the deaths of his mother, father-in-law, and beloved dog Gus, along with a series of painful injuries related to his Parkinson\u2019s. \u201cI broke this shoulder \u2014 had it replaced. I broke this elbow, this hand, my face\u2026 and that sucked,\u201d he says wryly.<\/p>\n

Since his 1991 diagnosis at age 29, Fox has endured progressive symptoms and health setbacks. He underwent spinal surgery in 2018, suffered multiple falls, and admits to periods of emotional darkness. \u201cI lost family, my dog, my health, my freedom,\u201d he says. \u201cAll the signs of depression were there.\u201d But, he adds, \u201cMy family pulled me out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fox remains anchored by love for his wife, Tracy Pollan, and their four children. His Upper East Side office is filled with family photos, awards, and a portrait of Gus. Despite everything, Fox insists he still has \u201ca great life.\u201d<\/p>\n

His new documentary, Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie<\/em>, explores his life and career \u2014 not with pity, but with honesty and humor. Director Davis Guggenheim says Fox insisted, \u201cNo violins,\u201d not wanting a maudlin film.<\/p>\n

Still<\/em> reveals both Fox\u2019s comic genius and his unshakable spirit. Clips from Back to the Future<\/em>, Family Ties<\/em>, and Spin City<\/em> show his balletic timing and unmatched physical comedy. \u201cPeople underestimated him,\u201d Guggenheim says. \u201cHe was swift, graceful \u2014 it looked effortless.\u201d<\/p>\n

Today, Parkinson\u2019s has affected Fox\u2019s mobility and speech. \u201cSometimes my jokes land flat because people can\u2019t understand me,\u201d he admits. Yet he\u2019s found ways to adapt \u2014 and still finds joy in the \u201clittle math problems of existence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite being retired from acting since 2020, Fox continues to raise awareness and funds through his foundation, which has brought in over $2 billion for Parkinson\u2019s research. He\u2019s also written four memoirs, with a new one, Future Boy<\/em>, due in October.<\/p>\n

Fox says Parkinson\u2019s is \u201cthe gift that keeps on taking,\u201d but it\u2019s also brought clarity. \u201cThere\u2019s plenty to be gained in the loss,\u201d he reflects. Though he admits, \u201cI won\u2019t win at this,\u201d he remains grounded in purpose and gratitude.<\/p>\n

His upcoming role in Shrinking<\/em> marks his first acting return in five years. Co-star Harrison Ford called the experience \u201ca life lesson,\u201d praising Fox\u2019s strength and spirit.<\/p>\n
