Motherhood awakens powerful instincts \u2014 and Shelby Ann Carter\u2019s story is a heartbreaking yet inspiring example.<\/p>\n

In January 2017, 21-year-old Shelby had just welcomed her baby girl, Keana, into the world. But only weeks later, tragedy struck. While home alone with her newborn, Shelby\u2019s house caught fire. With smoke filling the home and no way out, she acted with incredible courage.<\/p>\n

In her final moments, Shelby strapped Keana into a car seat and dropped her safely from a second-story window \u2014 sacrificing her own life to save her daughter\u2019s. Shelby died from carbon monoxide poisoning, but Keana survived unharmed.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s nothing short of a miracle,\u201d said Fire Chief Ed Foglesonger.<\/p>\n

The small town of Wyoming, Illinois, mourned her loss deeply. In the weeks that followed, neighbors raised nearly $40,000 to support her family.<\/p>\n
