Vincent D\u2019Onofrio<\/strong> is best known for his breakout role as the troubled Marine recruit Leonard in Stanley Kubrick\u2019s Full Metal Jacket<\/em>. The role required him to gain nearly 80 pounds and shave his head, a transformation that drastically altered his appearance and impacted his public image\u2014particularly with women who once admired his athletic build and curly hair.<\/p>\n

Born in Brooklyn, D\u2019Onofrio got his start in theater and supported himself with odd jobs\u2014like nightclub bouncer and bodyguard for stars like Yul Brynner\u2014before landing roles in indie films. His friend, actor Matthew Modine, encouraged him to audition for Kubrick, which launched his film career.<\/p>\n

The intense physical demands of Full Metal Jacket<\/em> took a toll, especially during the boot camp scenes filmed at his heaviest weight of 280 pounds. Although his performance earned critical acclaim, fans often mistook him for his character, treating him as if he were unintelligent.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople said things to me twice,\u201d he recalled. \u201cIt was a strange life change.\u201d<\/p>\n

Within a year, he returned to his lean frame, but the role opened the door to a long, varied career. He credits Kubrick for jumpstarting it: \u201cI\u2019ve done over 50 films because of that part.\u201d He\u2019s since starred in Law & Order: Criminal Intent<\/em>, Daredevil<\/em>, Jurassic World<\/em>, and more. In 2023, he published a book titled Pigs Can\u2019t Look Up<\/em>.<\/p>\n

D\u2019Onofrio, now 64, was deeply affected by his parents’ divorce and moved to Florida with his mother and stepfather, writer George Meyer. There, he developed an interest in magic, inspired by Cuban performers.<\/p>\n

In the early \u201990s, he had a daughter, Leila George, with actress Greta Scacchi. He married Dutch model Carin van der Donk in 1997, with whom he had two sons. Though they separated in the early 2000s, they reconciled\u2014until June 2023, when he filed for divorce after 26 years of marriage.<\/p>\n

Recently, he appeared in The Unforgivable<\/em> with Sandra Bullock and the comedy Dumb Money<\/em>.<\/p>\n
