Her death was confirmed by drummer <strong data-start=\"295\" data-end=\"311\">Jay Schellen<\/strong>, who called her \u201ca marvel to behold\u2026 a voice with no limits and no equal.\u201d The cause of death was not disclosed.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"426\" data-end=\"822\">Born <strong data-start=\"431\" data-end=\"451\">Mark Edward Free<\/strong> in 1954, she began performing at 19 and rose to fame after forming <strong data-start=\"519\" data-end=\"533\">King Kobra<\/strong> with Carmine Appice in 1983. Her soaring vocals on <em data-start=\"585\" data-end=\"602\">Ready to Strike<\/em> and <em data-start=\"607\" data-end=\"629\">Thrill of a Lifetime<\/em> made her one of rock\u2019s most distinctive voices. She later joined <strong data-start=\"695\" data-end=\"705\">Signal<\/strong> and, in 1990, co-founded <strong data-start=\"731\" data-end=\"747\">Unruly Child<\/strong>, whose 1992 debut cemented her reputation as a powerful vocal storyteller.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"824\" data-end=\"1098\">In <strong data-start=\"827\" data-end=\"835\">1993<\/strong>, Free came out as transgender, becoming <strong data-start=\"876\" data-end=\"900\">Marcie Michelle Free<\/strong>. Though the decision cost her industry support, she said transitioning was \u201ca decision between life and death.\u201d After stepping back from music and battling alcoholism, she found sobriety and faith.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1100\" data-end=\"1315\">Free reunited with Unruly Child in <strong data-start=\"1135\" data-end=\"1143\">2009<\/strong>, releasing several albums including <em data-start=\"1180\" data-end=\"1196\">Worlds Collide<\/em> and <em data-start=\"1201\" data-end=\"1223\">Down the Rabbit Hole<\/em>.
