At a recent event that was hosted by Turning Point USA, JD Vance shared how his interfaith marriage with Usha is going great, who was raised in a Hindu family and now lives in a mostly Christian household.
However, he raised eyebrows when he claimed that he hopes one day she can switch over and accept Christianity, which is the faith he belongs to. This left a weird feeling in many people’s minds, with many referring to him as a racist and a red flag.
He noted that when they both met, they were not religious, but with the passing of time, things got better. Vance converted to Catholicism and the kids in the house are raised as Christians.
He acknowledged that his wife didn’t grow up in the same religion as him but he did wish she accepted his religion. “I hope one day she might be moved in by church”- he mentioned.
His remarks triggered serious backlash, critics accusing the Vice President of being so insensitive to his wife and possibly hinting at nationalist sentiments by effectively asking his wife to convert.
Since then, Vance has been doing his best to clear the air and remove the negativity linked to this ordeal. Vance characterized the situation as something that was never meant to cause harm or disregard to his wife after many felt he threw her under the bus with the remarks.
