Sixteen-year-old Eric runs away from his foster family during a camping trip, hoping to find his biological mother and the answers he’s always sought. As he confronts painful truths about family and identity, his journey takes an unexpected turn.
On the road, Eric feels unsettled by the Johnson family’s new dynamic with their biological child, Mila. At a gas station, he spots a diner that triggers a memory, pulling out a photo of himself and his mother, Eliza. Later, after setting up camp, Eric quietly leaves, determined to find her.
He walks for hours, finally arriving at the diner where Eliza, older and hardened, is surprised to see him. She denies being his mother, but after some tense conversation, she reluctantly lets him sit with her. After a robbery and a quick escape, Eric is caught by the police, who return him to the Johnsons, deeply worried for him.
At the station, Eric admits he wanted to find a real family, but his encounter with Eliza shattered that hope. The Johnsons, relieved to find him, reassure him that he’s always been their son, and reveal that they’ve arranged to officially adopt him. Eric, overwhelmed, realizes he has the family he’s always needed.
