Ask any parent, and they’ll tell you there’s nothing they wouldn’t do for their child. From the moment we become parents, our lives revolve around loving and protecting our little ones—but sometimes, tragedy strikes beyond our control.
Alina and Aaron Edwards’ world shattered when their 9-year-old daughter, Emma, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Though they hoped she’d beat cancer, doctors eventually told them there was nothing more they could do. Determined to make the most of her remaining time, Emma’s parents set out to fulfill her final wish.
Unlike most children who might dream of Disneyland, Emma wanted to “marry” her 10-year-old boyfriend, DJ. Their story touched the local community, inspiring volunteers—dubbed Emma’s Army—to help make her dream come true. With help from the Make-A-Wish Foundation, friends, and generous donors, the wedding came together in just two days.
On June 29, 2023, Emma, dressed in a purple gown and escorted by her father, exchanged vows and rings with DJ. “I thought she was the most beautiful person I ever saw,” DJ said.
A few weeks later, on July 11, 2023, Emma passed away surrounded by loved ones. Her obituary described her as “a light to all who loved her and an inspiration to all she met.”
Rest in peace, sweet Emma—gone far too soon, but never forgotten.
