Zohran Mamdani Elected New York Mayor, CNN Analyst Raises Concerns
Zohran Mamdani, 34, is New York’s new mayor after winning Tuesday’s election with 50.4% of the vote, defeating independent candidate Andrew Cuomo, who received 42%.
In his victory speech, Mamdani—New York’s first Muslim mayor—said, “I am young, I am Muslim, I am a democratic socialist. And most damning of all, I refuse to apologize for any of this.” He added that the city had given “a mandate for change” and a “government that delivers.”
Mamdani also addressed Donald Trump, who had threatened to cut federal funding if he won: “Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up.”
However, CNN analyst Van Jones expressed concern that Mamdani’s tone had shifted from the campaign trail. “The warm, open, embracing guy wasn’t there tonight,” Jones said, calling it a “character switch” that could hurt him politically.
