Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has confirmed that she has chosen to quit from Congress and therefore will not be running for re-election.
Her decision brings to a close a remarkable career in Congress that spans nearly 40 years. Pelosi was first elected to the House in the year 1987 and has held office continuously since then.

As Speaker, she assisted shepherd landmark legislation such as the Affordable Care Act and major financial reforms.
Her leadership periods were also marked by confrontations with Trump, which included overseeing impeachment processes and the post January 6 investigation.

Pelosi’s decision to retire has led to major happiness amongst MAGA activists who considered her to be an absolute savage. But her decision also means that it would open up her San Francisco based district for a new generation of Democrats, setting up a major and significant succession moment inside the same party.
The Democratic party lost a high profile fundraiser and veteran leader at a time when generational change is currently underway. Some claim that her replacement might pave the way for others such as AOC who is another outspoken activist that isn’t adored by many Republicans including Donald Trump.
