A viral video of a tricycle driver with a severe head lice infestation has alarmed Filipino netizens. The now-deleted post by Facebook user Primo Onipa aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of untreated lice and reminded drivers to maintain proper hygiene.
The footage showed lice crawling across the driver’s neck and shirt—an extreme case of infestation.
According to Dr. Jay Recasata of Faces and Curves, head lice are contagious and can cause scalp wounds and bacterial infections. Treatment is simple, requiring a special shampoo costing around ₱500. However, Dr. Enrique Collantes of Derma Clinic warned that untreated cases may lead to anemia and malnutrition.
The National Health Service notes lice spread through direct contact or shared items like combs and hats. They can also survive briefly on furniture, bedding, and towels.
To prevent lice, experts advise washing clothes and bedding in hot water, vacuuming, and soaking brushes for several minutes. Maintaining hygiene is essential, especially for those who interact with many people daily, such as drivers and commuters.
