The Kessler twins — famed performers who once worked with Frank Sinatra and Fred Astaire — died together on Monday through legally assisted medical aid.
According to German outlet Bild, Alice and Ellen Kessler, both 89, ended their lives at their home near Munich, saying they no longer wished to live.
Born in 1936, the sisters rose to fame in the 1950s and ’60s, representing West Germany at the 1959 Eurovision Song Contest and later becoming stars through the variety show Studio Uno and a Playboy cover feature.
Police ruled out foul play after their deaths. Assisted dying has been legal in Germany since 2019, provided individuals take the prescribed substance themselves and act voluntarily.
The twins had previously said they wished to be buried together in one urn.
Following their passing, Radio Monte Carlo paid tribute, calling them “inseparable” and “an iconic artistic duo” who left “an indelible imprint on the collective imagination.”
