My husband and I gave our granddaughter Eloise a wedding gift from her registry—a small air fryer, the least expensive item. She immediately called, angry, accusing us of being cheap. She expected more because we’ve given other grandkids large cash gifts, typically $40,000, before their weddings. I tried to explain, but she refused to listen and hung up, saying we didn’t love her enough.
We were shocked by her reaction and later decided not to give her the usual cash gift, feeling she hadn’t earned it. A week later, Eloise learned the truth from her cousins and called again, accusing us of punishing her. We explained it wasn’t about the air fryer but her disrespectful attitude. Despite her apologies, we stood firm, saying actions have consequences.
Eloise threatened to boycott Christmas and her mother sided with her, calling us unreasonable. However, we’ve always supported Eloise financially, paying for her college and contributing to her wedding. We stand by our decision and hope this will be a learning moment for her about love and respect.
Though the holidays might be quieter without them, we remain open to reconciliation whenever Eloise is ready.
