Australian actress and journalist Clare McCann has shared the devastating loss of her 13-year-old son, Atreyu, who died by suicide after months of severe bullying at school.
In an emotional Instagram post, McCann described Atreyu as her “brightest light,” revealing he endured relentless abuse shortly after starting Year 7 at a NSW public school. She said the bullying included physical attacks, humiliation, harassing phone calls, and an alleged attempt by classmates to drown him during a school camp.
Despite repeatedly warning school officials and government departments and providing medical and psychological reports, McCann says no effective action was taken. In April, after Atreyu told her he would kill himself if forced to return to school, she removed him and sought professional help, believing he was beginning to heal.
Following his death, McCann launched a GoFundMe campaign to cryogenically preserve Atreyu’s body, cover medical and legal costs, and establish a trust in his name. Any additional funds would support anti-bullying reform and help other affected families.
Now using her public platform, McCann says she is seeking justice and change, determined not to let her son’s story end in silence.
